Work in Progress of a Giraffe Drawing

Well, you know that feeling when you are working on something and it just doesn't quite feel finished? I am having that feeling very very strongly with this giraffe. I have always enjoyed the quirky nature of the giraffe's fascinating physique, and wish to do it justice with my art, but I cannot quite figure out what to do next.......yeah, honestly I am not feeling too confident that this art is going to make it to the final round. The eyes are too flat and something about the linework is not there. I will keep trying until all hope is lost!

Exciting news, I made my first sale of a print on Etsy today! I am so happy and excited. I have sold art on Ebay years ago, and it feels so wonderful to know that people will plunk down their hard earned cash to enjoy my work. I am really pleased that there is a venue for artists and artisans on the internet that has received as much notice as Etsy has. I personally have been buying a lot more handmade items lately online and at fairs because it seems so much more supportive of other creators than buying some knickknack at one's local big box store. So thanks for supporting me, everyone!

Black and white abstract flower sketch

This is my sketch for this fine weekend. I was originally planning on only blogging on the art that was created to make prints, but that is a little boring for a couple of reasons. One of those reasons is that I cannot crank out completely finished pieces quite that fast! Sometimes you just have a dry spell where you are making neat stuff with sketches or other creative outlets like upcycled arts and crafts but you aren't coming up with anything to go with the series of prints that you are creating. I make it a goal to sketch a little every day, so I will post those too. Enjoy the randomness of my sketches!

Bearly There, I do declare

Today's fresh art offering is a bear

With a lot of hair

I cannot even compare

The greatness of my bear

Yes, well, I never said I was a poet, although for some strange reason I keep trying. I am trying to write an article about arts marketing and I am trying to be all serious and business like with it. That is difficult for me, as you can well imagine! Also we finally finished up the free download section of the site, so that is pretty awesome! We have one whole print up right now-whoo hoo!

As always, sign up for our newsletter for news on new art, new downloadable prints, and articles!

Foxy fox in flowers and grass

This little fox design has been with me for years, I just like the thought of a glowing white fox relaxing in the flowered shade. The inspiration for the fox design is strongly influenced by stained glass designs and the flowers are a style I use often that seem to harken back to the 70's. I am posting it for sale on Etsy soon, so keep an eye out. A foxy eye, that is!

In personal day to day news, Mr. Husband has recovered from his wisdom teeth removal at last. He felt awful for over a week and was having a lot of pain. I have been taking care of him and Little Princess, and drawing foxes, so it has definitely been a busy week. I have also been reading a short story collection of halloween stories-in the middle of May-because I love Halloween year round! I want to draw Halloween stuff year round, but people might think that is a little odd. Well, I am an artist, so I guess people expect me to be a little odd, so precedent says I can post Halloween stuff year round for absolutely no reason! Have a fabulous, funky, foxy day everybody!

Octopus drawing for sale

Well, for some strange reason, octopus necklaces are a bit of a running joke on Etsy-I guess because Regretsy cracks on them every chance they get for people always labeling them "unique" when there are dozens of other sellers who have the exact same pendant from Hobby Lobby for sale. Despite the bad press, it is still really fun to draw an octopus, so I did, and here she is!

Pig on a Pillow Digital Art print

Well, this is the moment we have all been oinking for. The legendary pig on a pillow portrait has arrived. Trust me, I know you have been waiting up night after night, dreaming of the happy moment when this little piggy arrived at your computer screen, so here goes!

If you are curious about the inspiration for this piece, I would have to credit Nursery rhymes. I have been reading those little nuggets of weirdness to my toddler constantly. She wants Mama to read her nursery rhymes pretty much all day. I can only read so many silly poems about pigs before I start conjuring up piggly art in my creative heart!

Oh, yes, and what a deer you are

My latest, most glorious masterpiece that I am sure MOMA will want to display in their hallowed halls of art greatness is a little deer. A fawn, if you please. All bright eyed and blinky and curious about the world. I am thinking that perhaps this piece is a little more geared to tots. I really enjoy drawing things for children as they are a very appreciative audience. I had a little cousin that passed away in a car wreck, she was so young, only 22, and it breaks your heart to think of it. She loved when I drew her little things when we I was a teenager babysitting her. Even though my art still had a long way to go, she always really liked anything I drew for her because it was just for her. Ever since then, I thought a great deal about having a lot of my work being whimsical illustrative type work for children. I even went to college for illustration, not that I listened to my professors at the time, even if I should have!

I am hoping to post more information this week as this weekend was beyond busy and hectic. Family emergencies tend to distract one away from the studio. Oh, and how could I forget...hope you enjoyed your mother's day!

Editing and marketing and more editing and more marketing

Whew. Just...whew. So this weekends adventure for our art print business has been quite a learning curve and ride. I made a couple of decisions that had to be implemented, and I am really glad I did this stuff before we put up any more art for sale. For one thing, I am sad to report, the original archival paper we chose for our prints is very finicky and difficult to work with. Cotton rag paper throws up a fine dust when it prints and the printer keeps jamming no matter how much I clean it out. So I decided to switch to a archival matte photography paper and have been very pleased with the results. Of course, the paper does not have the thickness of the rag paper, but it is still archival, high quality, and suits the nature of my art very well. The velvet rag is reknown for creating vibrant colorful art prints but since I rarely use it for color, that point is moot. I am now charging about $5 less per print because of the paper switch, as it is not as expensive as the cotton rag paper, nor does it take so much time to get it to print....and time is money!

The next adventure was editing all of the artwork I had backed up. Nine pieces were drawn, nine pieces were edited, and hopefully will create nine sales soon! Of course you also have to reconfigure the art for Etsy and Zazzle, so that editing is not complete, but we shall struggle on until the great work has been wrought!

As for marketing, I really had to update and redo tags. Tags are so important for people to find you. SEO is highly dependent upon a great number of factors and tags are one of the biggies. I had not tagged my Etsy listings properly, nor my Zazzle, nor this blog! You are only going to build traffic if people can find you. Art is a tough sell, and you need every tool availiable. Artists are often considered to not have good business sense, and I am trying to buck that trend.

In personal news, Little Princess Mittencuffs is now running all around the house just to run. She really loves just walking from room to room for no reason other than to walk. Her enthusiam for life is so encouraging. If I brought half that energy and joy to my efforts, I should be a millionaire in a week or two. Well, that about sums up this weekened round up!

Pug Puggy pug pug

Yes, if you can't guess from the title, I drew a pug today in all his wrinkly adorable pugness. Pugs are so cute I don't even know where to begin. I drew a koi fish too and would love to post that goodness. I have really got to get up more on the tech aspect of this whole indie artist thing. I want to post pics but it is like I screw up every darned time. My husband is a neverending well of patience and kindess who keeps showing me all this stuff over and over again. I will absorb it one day like the mighty sponge! How on earth is the endless vastness of our great and terrible Mistress Internet going to harshly judge my art otherwise?

Caw, caw, caw!!!

Well, I decided to stop being such a sniveling weenie like I was feeling when I wrote my last post and get off my behind and keep on trying for the dream, baby! I drew crow/raven goodness, all hot and fresh and ready for Etsy. Part of my motivation is that it really is an encouraging community. I have been favorited, hearted, and treasuried quite a bit considering I only have five items for sale right just now. I will add more soon...yeah! Also doing all the boring stuff like redoing my tags, photoshopping, etc. etc. I have also been researching zazzle as a nice little side hustle there. They seem to have a really good reputation from what I have gathered and a passive income from my designs would be fantastico.

In life news, eh, not much happening. Rainy drizzly day so the husband and I stayed in the house with our rotten little princess, eating ice cream and reading stories. My husband loves those old time radio drama podcasts, so we listened to one today from the 60's about a haunted cathedral. It was quite good and subtly horrible, a bit Lovecraftian but not as grotesque. If only our little princess hadn't destroyed the spooky storytelling by making her barnyard toy go MOO! OINK! OINK! it would have been perfect. I am also reading the Incarceron series and so far I like it a lot. That's about it, friends of the interwebs...have a good night!
