So What Is R. Moses Working On Next?

Awww, c'mon guys, I just released a whole 75,ooo word book! Yet you say you want more, so since I am ever your humble servant, I shall give you more. Let's see, what is going on?

Well, the launch of A Fury of Angels went smashingly. Already got lots of positive comments/emails/reviews, thank you all so much for your feedback. For the "Last Savior Trilogy," I am working on an omnibus edition for those of you who like to buy one bundle. The omnibus will not have any new material, just the three books. No bonus chapters or interviews or anything! I am sad to see the series done but I am so excited to be working on the next series...

Speaking of, I do have an update on that as well. A few posts back I said I was going to write a young adult series about a carnival. As I was writing the first book, I realized something...

I have a really hard time writing young adult. Much as I love to read it, I find restricting cursing/violence/sexuality too hard. It's just not my style. So I am not diving into young adult books anytime soon. The next series will be under the same pen name of R. Moses. It will still feature a carnival and is fantasy themed. Do you want a sneak peek? Do you?

Okay, you talked me into it. I have to warn you, it is only a second draft so it is not polished and will likely change by the time the first book is published. Here goes!

Untitled Second Draft of the Carnival Book

Mud and blood filled Kara's mouth.

Kara tucked her knees under and pushed up. She spit out the blood and mud as best as she could.

Anna's mocking laughter washed over her. She said, “You have been spurned, dear sister.”

Kara did not respond. Carefully she found her footing in the slimy earth. She stood up and backed away from her half-sister. Her teeth and jaw were throbbing from where Anna had just hit her. But Kara could not hit back or she would be a fugitive, running from the King's Law.

Anna gave her a mean, little smile. She was dressed in green hunting leathers and metal-tipped boots. She was much taller than Kara, even though she was younger, and towered over her as she asked, “Nothing to say?”

It took every last bit of Kara's self-control to not rush her half-sister or retort back. Anna was their mutual father's heir, a young noble, and enjoyed the full rights and protection that station afforded. If any commoner, sister or no, hurt her they were fair game for the King's Justice.

Kara was just a recently freed slave with little rights and no kingly defense. If she hurt Anna and was caught as a fugitive running from the King's Justice, the best punishment she could hope for was having the hand she hit a noble with cut off.

She did not even want to think of the worst punishment.

Kara backed away a few more feet, towards the woods. She had to leave now. If she did not, she was going to hurt Anna very, very badly. She said with forced calm, “I am leaving now.” Her jaw throbbed with each movement. She edged a little closer to the woods where she had hidden a satchel full of food and spare clothes.

Anna was not done with her taunts. She said, “Father may have freed you, but you will always have the soul of a slave.”

Kara's fingers twitched and jerked towards her throwing knife. She forced them to stop. Nothing would make her happier right now than if the knife was buried up to the hilt in Anna's long neck.

...and that's all you get! Hopefully the book will be out next month. Have a great Monday!

A Fury of Angels: Update

Well, the update is I am still on track for early May publishing of A Fury of Angels. No delays! Whoo hoo! We are designing the cover today; fingers crossed that it will rock!

So what else is new? One big thing I am thinking of is my next series, and I have gotten several questions about what I am writing next. I do  believe I will take up a new pen name and write a young adult fantasy series. I like the fast pace and themes of young adult, and I feel those components fit well with the themes. I already have the first 8,000 words or so written out of the series. Here's a fun little hint: the setting is a carnival. Carnivals are all bright lights and dark corners, and of course, you all know I am going to explore the dark corners! There is going to be ghosts and evil carnies! It does NOT get better than that!

The last little bit of news I have is that I finally updated my "About Me" page. I sort of compiled all the most popular fan questions I get and smushed them together. There is a picture of me added too if you REALLY want to know what I look like. So go check out the "About Me" page if you want to know more about me. If you do not want to know more about me, I understand completely. I am the most boring person I know!

Well, back to working sixteen hour days until A Fury of Angels is published! Cheers!

Delay Number One : Fury of Angels

Oh, my faithful readers. I regret to inform you I got sick on Saturday and the sickness spread like germy wildfire through my household. We are still recovering and now I think A Fury of Angels will be published in early May. It's only a couple of days, but I missed my deadline.

Again.

Sigh.

In the hopes of cheering everyone up despite my utter failings at time management, here is yet another zentangle sketch of a unicorn. I sketched this like five or six years ago then pulled it out of storage and finished it. I rarely add much color to my pen and ink sketches, so this one is a little different. Hope you enjoy!

Zentangle Dragon

Oh, yeah, a zentangle dragon this week. Whoo hoo. I thought he was kind of cute, with big round eyes and a lazy smile. Drawing him helped me think as I finished up the second draft of A Fury of Angels. And trust me, there is a lot of fury! I am happy to report I am still on track for a release at the end of this month but you never know what trials await this haggard writer...keep sending those happy-waves-finish-the-trilogy-already-dang-it-vibes!

I also hope to design the new cover for the book. I want more calligraphy in the typography so the final book will look different from the first two. They are going to have cover redos as well so they should all match up soon.

Anyway, enough of my blathering! Here is the dragon...dun dun dunnnnn....

A Sketch of Abira in Her Demon Body

Hello, my wicked minions! I have been meaning to post this very quick sketch for ages. This is what I think Abira looks like in her demon body. Her human body is a little different, naturally.

But I know you guys are really wondering when A Fury of Angels is coming out. I am writing it and still have a hopeful release date of Spring 2013. Also I have hired a voice actor to produce an audio book of A Shadow of Lilies which also has a hopeful release date of Spring 2013. So cheer me on, my fiends! I mean, friends! Lots of dark fantasy in the works...

A Binding of Demons…

...has bound its dark little way to my editor and beta readers. Thank you all so much for your patience once again! I know I did not deliver as quickly as hoped, but now that the manuscript is finished and just needs fine tuning, we can all breathe a sigh of relief. At least I hope we can!

The cover art is about halfway finished. I am sort of torn on how graphic to make the illustration. Too much blood might freak people out a little bit!

And now it is time for answer fan questions!

How many books are going to be in the series?

Oh, how I wish I had a simple answer to such a simple question! I intended for the series to be a trilogy, but as the story expands and new characters are added, I am debating making it four books. Now any self-respecting fantasy fan knows this is a recipe for disaster. Every time an author decides to add just one more book, you have no end in sight. Think Wheel of Time. Or the series just starts to stretch on too long and loses its original happy sparkles.

I don't want to lose my happy sparkles, folks!

Will there be a print version of the book coming out? I want to share this book with my aunt/best friend/local witchdoctor/pet goldfish but they don't have an ereader!

Having a omnibus in print is one of my major goals next year. I have also been asked about audiobooks, and I am very interested in creating audiobooks as well. I am starting to see more international interest in the series as well, and translations into multiple languages is a distinct possibility.

I love Baphomet! Can he be at least partially undressed in more scenes? Please? Or you could add illustrations!

Oh, ladies (and a few gentlemen), how wicked thou art. I don't know how many scenes he can be undressed in before the book gets banned in several countries. Let's push the limit, shall we?

Seriously, though, I am starting to sketch out drawings for the series. I think Baphomet would look lovely in a charcoal wash.

Who inspires you to write such morbid books?

This is probably my most frequently asked question. I grew up in the backwoods south, where weird, dark, morbid, scary, gross folklore is celebrated with a swing of moonshine. You trying living off a dirt road beside a graveyard when you are a rosy cheeked tot and see if doesn't influence you! The soft hooting of owls to usher in the winking moon, the thrash of vengeful spirits against your window...

Such was the lullaby a little country girl heard every night. And this little socially awkward girl stuck her nose in scary books whenever she could. Pile on about twenty years of this behavior and you have the terrible glory that is my festering imagination.

Hope that answers your questions! Next post will be sharing publishing dates...

Update on a Binding of Demons

Hello All!

I have been diligently rewriting my manuscript, and am happy to report I am well past the half way point in A Binding of DemonsI am still hoping to be done with the manuscript by late November so I can have it edited and formatted for a December release. I thank all my loyal fans for your ongoing patience, you guys rock! This has been a very trying spell, as my husband is working at the Renaissance Fair plus his day job, so he is working seven days a week. That leaves little ol' me to write seven days a week  in a mad dash to play catch up. Now mix in chasing my two year old little girl and trying to keep the laundry pile from reaching the ceiling, and you have my crazy life!

In other news, I am still back and forth on my newsletter design. There are a lot of different ways to create one, and I have been trying to figure out what would make readers happiest. Of course the main point of  this newsletter will be to announce new writing, but I was debating adding interviews, artwork, etc., etc. So drop me a line if you have any strong preferences.

Well, back to writing, guys!

My Computer Ate My Homework-No, Really

Well, for all my eager fans waiting to see what happens to Abira, I must tell you that on occasion fate works against us all. My none-to-faithful harddrive imploded and ate A Binding of Demons. The completed manuscript, ready to be printed out and edited, was consumed in rapid mechanical fury. Perhaps my computer is peeved with me because I imply how technology is evil is in A Shadow of Lilies. I can't even cry, I just look around my studio with a vague sense of impotent rage, wondering how I am going to rewrite the entire book in the timeframe I promised you all.

The answer is that I cannot. The early October release is now looking like mid to late November 2012.

On the upside of things, I am close to creating a newsletter that will tell you when books, short stories, or novellas are released. I am sure everyone has noticed by now how I am not the most consistent blogger, which is ironic considering the fact that I write for a living.

In the meanwhile, here are some questions I have recieved-answered! Ta da!

Did You Design Your Own Cover?

Why yes, yes I did. The joys of saving money harken to my shriveled soul, so I hired myself to design the cover! Luckily I had four years of otherwise useless art college to teach me the mysteries of designing a suitable cover.

Why Did You Write a Book About the Devil? Isn't That Kind of Creepy?

I have always been fascinated with the mythos surrounding the nature of sin, of good and evil, and the Devil. He is shrouded in gauzy layers of dark human imagining and I felt the strange urge to remove those layers, peeling them back like a bloody onion! Demons have been blamed for so many human ills over thousands of years, from pox to nightmares, and now that science and reason have come to banish the wonder from our lives, we are told that it is not cavorting demons that cause pox, it is some tiny microbe. That is pretty boring. Finding the Devil, and figuring out why he does what he does, has been an ongoing human quest.

Okay, maybe that was long winded and did not quite answer the question. I wrote a book about the devil because he is interesting. And yes, it is creepy.

How Long Did It Take To Write the Book?

Three months. I think I wrote about five thousand words a day, then rewrote, then edited about five times. The book is only about 70,ooo words, which is pretty short, so it is possible to write a short novel in so little time.

Will Abira Get Over Her Repulsion of Sirin?

I am not even going to tell you that, that is one of the main plots! You are just going to have to wait and find out!

Now, I am going to go rewrite A Binding of Demons and try to cobble together an awesome newsletter. Is there a cant for that?
