About Me

R. Moses

R. Moses

So who are you, R. Moses?

Nobody interesting, really. I am just a not-so-southern belle living near capital city in North Carolina. I eat too much fried food and not enough vegetables. I sleep too much, I dream too much.

If you are wondering about what makes me tick in terms of creation, well, let's see...I grew up off a dirt road in a forest. My home was a log cabin, complete with a pasture full of goats, a chicken pen, and a couple of hound dogs-my favorite was a blue-tick named Scooter. The cabin was spooky. Owls hooting and wind whispering through the trees; my fevered little imagination conjured ghosts from creaks and haints from hoots.

So in conclusion of my childhood, I was a lonely, weird little kid who would rather read than play with other children, and that trend has continued well into adulthood. Might I also add I was the only kid in my kindergarten class who had glasses? I wonder if that was when the divide from societal norms truly began...

As I got older, I grew to love drawing almost as much as I loved reading, and tried my hand at writing in a little unicorn journal that I think I finally threw out a year ago. I would illustrate my riveting stories with the best colored pencils the dollar store had to offer! I was proud of my little homemade books and journals; it felt like I really did something.

So now who am I? To be completely sentimental, I am a mom and a wife first; my family is great and I could have never-NEVER-gotten this far in my work without the support my husband gives and the inspiration my beautiful little girl provides. Secondly, I suppose I am a “new media freelancer”-whatever that means-who licenses artworks, writes books, and collaborates on video and podiobooks. Still curious about me? Hmmm....let me add a few more questions...

You keep drawing unicorns and dragons. What's the deal with all the fantasy creatures?

It's just me. I just love unicorns and dragons. I have collected both since I was a wee one. I find the religious/sexual/metaphysical symbolism of the two fascinating. For instance, both creatures frequently seem to engage with virgin maidens and harm them or bless them. Why is that? What is with the virgins?

Let me put it to you this way: if I had a ba-jillion zillion dollars, I would open up a unicorn-dragon museum, free to the public. I would give long-winded lectures at my own museum about the mighty beasts. I would constantly harass other writers and artists to contribute something. I would make a new dish called dragon's tail and serve it at the crappy museum cafeteria. I would...

Well, I think you, dear reader, get the point. I like dragons and unicorns. Ta da!

What's your favorite books?

What's your favorite organ? I need all my beloved books like you need your heart or lungs! I just cannot answer that question. My favorite genres are: gritty reality fantasy, science fiction, horror, alternate history fantasy...
I will try to be a bit more specific, although it is so HARD! 'Course I love a lot of the classics like:

  • The Hobbit by Tolkien
  • Dune by Frank Herbert
  • Collected Works of H.P. Lovecraft
  • Chronicles of Amber by Zelany
  • Foundation Series by Asimov

I love these kinds of modern books:

  • The Eye of the Dragon by Stephen King
  • The Abarat by Clive Barker
  • Coldheart Canyon by Clive Barker
  • A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin
  • The Prince of Nothing by R. Scott Bakker
  • Lilith's Brood by Octavia Butler

I also am loving a lot of indie writers lately, like:

  • The Emperor's Edge by Lindsay Buroker
  • The Changelings by Elle Casey
  • The Guild of The Cowry Catchers by Abigail Hilton
  • Wool by Hugh Howey

What else are you into? Movies, TV shows, sports, what?

Are you still reading this? You must be tired of me by now! I rarely watch movies and TV due to time constraints. I guess if I had to pick my favorite movie trio it would be Lord of the Rings. TV, I liked “Spartacus,” and “True Blood.” I get sort of mildy fascinated by those “Hoarder” type shows, although in general I do not like reality TV. I don't like sports, watching grown men chase a ball makes my brain hurt. I do enjoy walking around the park and making my daughter laugh while we chase butterflies. I love to eat fried food despite heart disease being rampant in my family. I like pointless philosophical sparring with my husband. I like fall, and I adore Halloween. I love ghost hunting. I also like dollhouses-tiny things just make me happy.

Okay, anything else you got to say, dark fantasy author lady who likes dollhouses and chasing butterflies?

Why, yes, yes there is, thank you so much for asking! I adore my fans and I adore writing. If you guys were not cheering me on and spreading the word, I would be writing into a vacuum-and probably screaming into it too. I will always 'make' things, whether it be art or crafts or stories, but I am able to create much more with the support of fans behind me. You are just as much a part of my writing as my imagination is! So thank you!
